Investment consultant fees are approximately 35 basis points annually and are charged against investment returns before these returns are posted to fund balances.

Occasionally other fees may apply, when special circumstances require unusual outside expertise or assistance.

All fees are annually reviewed by the FAV Board of Directors and may be adjusted over time.

The Foundation for Appalachian Virginia’s investment strategy for endowed funds is to preserve the original value of gifts in terms of inflation and grow assets, to the extent that market conditions allow, to support charitable needs now and in the future. For non-endowed funds, both the principal and net earnings are available for charitable distribution.

The FAV offers an investment pool designed to achieve long-term growth using equities and fixed income holdings.  Non-endowed funds may be invested in the long-term portfolio, as well as short-term fixed income and a highly liquid cash management portfolio.

The FAV’s Investment and Finance Committee, which includes investment professionals who work in the region, meet quarterly to review the FAV’s portfolio performance, recommend spending rates, and make recommendations to the Board of Directors concerning investment advisor(s), budgetary issues, spending policies, and fees.
