Who we are

Nurturing Charitable Giving in Our Region

The Foundation for Appalachian Virginia (FAV) is a new regional community foundation serving the Virginia Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Washington and the Cities of Norton and Bristol. Its mission is to nurture charitable giving and collaboration in Southwest Virginia to make individual lives better and communities stronger across generations.

Create lasting impact

Your generosity is just the beginning

The FAV, like other community foundations, is a 501(c)(3) public charity that helps donors give back in ways that are meaningful to them and to their community. The FAV is receiving gifts of all sizes from people seeking to make a difference in the lives of others. Many donors will intend for their gifts to be invested as endowments, with the income being used to support grants in perpetuity.

The value of having a new community foundation in Southwest Virginia goes well beyond the benefits of aiding donors in making gifts that will increase support for the community; the FAV will be a catalyst and a tool for uniting gifts of time, talent, and treasure to create transformational impact.

Why we exist

How disparity in giving to rural areas contributed to the establishment of our foundation

Research has shown that rural areas receive less support from national foundations than urban/ suburban areas. The disparity in giving is a philanthropy gap, and one additional demonstration of the need to establish the Foundation for Appalachian Virginia.
