Access to Safe Drinking Water

Many of our Southwest Virginia neighbors have personal experience in hauling or buying water for long periods of time during droughts or after learning that their wells are contaminated. For residents dealing with a lack of safe drinking water, daily living must be organized around meeting household water needs – whether buying water by the gallon at a grocery store, hauling it in large quantities on a truck, or traveling long distances to wash clothes at a laundromat.

The Foundation for Appalachian Virginia will help to carry on the very important work of the Coalfield Water Development Fund by helping to administer its endowment in the future.

Connection to CWDF

How converting to a community foundation creates more opportunities for impact

The non-profit Coalfield Water Development Fund’s (CWDF) Board manages two drinking water endowments that have supported $11.5 million in grants for drinking water expansion in the Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell and the City of Norton.

The CWDF Board voted to gift its endowment to the FAV when the FAV is prepared to administer water project grants. When the CWDF endowment gift is received by the FAV, the FAV will assist the same counties/city in maintaining safe and affordable drinking water service.
